Altering Choices - WEEK 11 - PART 1

We have had many lessons and we have learned many things about how to resolve conflicts. We are now in the last section of our Caring Responses course. These last four chapters will focus on how we can learn to prevent conflicts.

In order to reduce conflict in your life, you must learn to depend on God to change your heart and alter your choices. In addition to a heart-change, you will need to learn how to identify what you said or did that contributed to a conflict so you can change your behavior in the future.

ALTER means to CHANGE

When we are in the heat of conflict it is typical human behavior for us to talk to everyone else about the problem instead of going directly to the person with whom we are having a conflict. This is disobedient to the way we are supposed treat others. And even when we do go to the other person, we often do it in a way the stirs up anger instead of resolving the conflict. (C. Sande, p. 128)

Only Jesus can help us overcome our sinful tendencies and behave correctly. Let's start this lesson with a prayer in song.

Integrity Worship Kids - Change My Heart, O God

This week we look in on Tony and Mr. Chung. You can color Worksheet pages 9-1 and 9-2 during the story. Choose the Listen in Browser button.

Tony fooled himself into thinking he could deceive is teacher and no one would know what he did.

1. Do you remember our Roots and Fruits lesson? Look back in lesson 4 and see if you can identify some of the possible root causes of Tony's choice to cheat.
  • Selfishness - he wanted to please himself instead of studying history.
  • Laziness - he didn't want to do the work.
  • Pride - he wanted his teacher and his classmates to think that he was smart.
  • Deceitfulness - he didn't want anyone to know that he hadn't studied.
2. What are Tony's choices now that his cheating has been discovered?
  • Play the Blame Game, which will make the problem worse.
  • Use the 5As to accept responsibility for his choice and plan how to alter (change) his choice in the future.
3. What will probably happen if he chooses to play the Blame Game?
4. Roll Play Activity: Act out what Tony would do if he played the Blame Game.
5. Copy our Bible memory verse into your notebook: "Those who plan what is good find love and faithfulness." Proverbs 14:22
6. Copy the word ALTER in your glossary. Alter means to change. Write that down too.
